The D.C. sniper attacks (also known as the Beltway sniper attacks) were
a series of coordinated shootings that occurred during three weeks in
October 2002 in
Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Ten
people were killed and three others were critically wounded in the
Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area and along Interstate 95
in Virginia.

The snipers were John Allen Muhammad (aged 41 at the time) and Lee
Boyd Malvo
(aged 17 at the time), who traveled in a blue 1990 Chevrolet
Caprice
sedan. Their crime spree, begun in February 2002, included
murders and robberies in the states of Alabama, Arizona, Florida,
Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, and Washington, which resulted in seven
deaths and seven wounded people; in ten months, the snipers killed
17 people and wounded 10 others.

In September 2003, Muhammad was sentenced to death, and in October,
the juvenile, Malvo, was sentenced to six consecutive
life sentences
without parole
. In November 2009, Muhammad was put to death by
lethal injection.

Marlon Brando Jr.
(April 3, 1924 – July 1, 2004)

A vintage
Vespa ridden by Hollywood legend Marlon Brando – illegally –
while visiting Britain is to go under the hammer.

Double-Oscar winner Brando rode the iconic Italian scooter around
Berkshire – even though it was not registered in the
U.K.

Brando’s “fun runaround” belonged to his American movie producer
pal Elliot Kastner, who he worked with on 1976 American epic western
"Missouri Breaks."

Kastner, best known for producing World War Two classic Where Eagles
Dare, bought the 1976 Vespa in Rome for a film shoot. He later shipped
it to England where he owned Runnymede House, a country home in
Old Windsor, Berkshire.

Cowboy-movie star Tom Mix was killed when he lost control of his speeding
Cord Phaeton convertible (above) and rolls into a dry wash (now called the
Tom Mix  Wash) near Florence,
Arizona. He was 60 years old. Today, visitors
to the
site of the accident can see a 2-foot–tall iron statue of a rudderless
horse (below) and a somewhat awkwardly written plaque that reads: “In
memory of Tom Mix whose spirit left his body on this spot and whose characterization and portrayals in life served to better fix memories of
the Old West in the minds of living men.”

Mix was born in Driftwood, Pennsylvania; deserted the Army in 1902; and
was a drum major in the Oklahoma Territorial Cavalry band when he went
off to Hollywood in 1909. Before there was a Clint Eastwood and before
there was a John Wayne … there was Tom Mix.
