RADIO STATIONS FIRST AIR DATE IN 1920
Coverage of the Harding-Cox Election was the first radio news broadcast
of KDKA in Pittsburgh.
Radio station KDKA (1020 kHz) is licensed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Created
by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation on November 2, 1920, it is the world’s
first commercial radio station, a distinction that has also been challenged by other stations. It is currently owned and operated by CBS Radio.
The world’s first broadcast of “market” reports are on the air on May 19,
1921.
KDKA hosted political comedian Will Rogers in his very first radio
appearance in 1922
SHOW DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1957
The Twentieth Century was a half-hour documentary series televised
by CBS. The premiere episode aired on Sunday October 20, 1957
and ran until 1966. It was hosted and narrated by Walter Cronkite. It
covered historical events and consisted of newsreel footage along
with interviews. The sponsor of the show was Prudential Insurance
Company of America.
