When you called Portland’s 911 in the past, they transferred you to the Portland Fire
Alarm Telegraph dispatch center on NE 21st Ave near the I-84 overpass. The building
(shown below) is now the sales office for Sunshine Dairy.

THE ROSWELL INCIDENT ON THIS DAY IN 1947

The Roswell incident took place on Monday, July 7, 1947, when an airborne
object crashed on a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. Explanations of what
actually occurred are based on both official and unofficial reports.The most
popular theory of what took place is that the object, or UFO, was a spacecraft
containing extraterrestrial life. Since the late 1970s, the Roswell incident has
been the subject of much controversy, and conspiracy theories have arisen
about the event.

The U.S. government maintains that what was recovered near Roswell was
debris from the crash of an experimental high-altitude surveillance balloon
belonging to what was then a classified top secret program named Mogul 
(see below).

OLDEST NEWSPAPER ON THE WEST COAST

The Oregonian
is a daily newspaper originating in Portland, Oregon, owned by 
Advance Publications. It is the oldest continuously published newspaper on the  
U.S. west coast and was founded as a weekly by Thomas J. Dryer on December 
4, 1850. The newspaper is the largest in the state of Oregon and the Pacific
Northwest by circulation and the
19th largest daily newspaper in the country.  

The Oregonian announced Thursday that it will reduce home delivery to 4
days and make reductions in staff as part of a series of changes, effective
October 1.

Garfield
is a comic strip created by Jim Davis. Published since June 19, 1978. It
chronicles the life of the title character, the cat Garfield who named after Davis’s 
grandfather, his owner, Jon Arbuckle; and Jon’s dog, Odie. As of 2013, it was 
syndicated in roughly 2,580 newspapers and journals, and held the Guinness
World Record for being the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip.
