Cooperstown philanthropist Stephen C. Clark – seeking a way
to celebrate and protect the National Pastime as well as an
economic engine for Cooperstown – asked National League
president Ford C. Frick if he would support the establishment
of a Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

The idea was welcomed, and in 1936 the inaugural Hall of Fame
class of Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe
Ruth and Honus Wagner was elected.

FIRST DRIVE-IN THEATER ON THIS DAY

On June 6, 1933, eager motorists parked their automobiles on
the grounds of
Camden Drive-In, the first-ever drive-in movie
theater, located on Admiral Wilson Boulevard in Pennsauken,
New Jersey.

Park-In Theaters–the term “drive-in” came to be widely used
only later–was the brainchild of Richard Hollingshead, a movie
fan and a sales manager at his father’s company, Whiz Auto
Products, in Camden. Reportedly inspired by his mother’s
struggle to sit comfortably in traditional movie theater seats, Hollingshead came up with the idea of an open-air theater
where patrons watched movies in the comfort of their own
automobiles.

BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE OPENED ON THIS DAY

Star Wars (1977) - Opening Scene [Stupid Edit] - YouTube

On May 25, 1977, Memorial Day weekend opens with an
intergalactic bang as the first of George Lucas’ blockbuster
Star Wars movies hit  American theaters.

The incredible success of Star Wars–it received seven Oscars,
and earned $461 million in U.S. ticket sales and a gross of
close to $800 million worldwide–began with an extensive,
coordinated marketing push by Lucas and his studio, 20th
Century Fox, months before the movie’s release date. “It
wasn’t like a movie opening,” actress Carrie Fisher, who
played rebel leader Princess Leia, later told Time magazine.
“It was like an earthquake.” Beginning with–in Fisher’s words–
“a new order of geeks, enthusiastic young people with sleeping
bags,” the anticipation of a revolutionary movie-watching
experience spread like wildfire, causing long lines in front of
movie theaters across the country and around the world.
