VOICE ACTOR BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1908

  Melvin Jerome "Mel" Blanc (May 30, 1908 – July 10, 1989)

Blanc, known as "The Man of 1000 Voices", was born in San Francisco,
California, and later moved to Portland, Oregon where he attended
Lincoln High School. He began his radio career at age 19 on the KGW
program The Hoot Owls in 1927. This is where his ability to produce
voices for a large number of characters was first noticed. Blanc also
worked for KEX radio in Portland with his own show in 1933.  

Mel Blanc later moved to Los Angeles and joined Warner-Bros- owned
KFWB radio in Hollywood where he soon became the voices of various
Warner-Bros cartoon characters including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and
Porky Pig, just to name a few.

Celebrities Arriving At The WWE's SummerSlam Kickoff Party In Hollywood

"Rowdy" Roddy Piper (Roderick "Roddy" George Toombs)

Piper made his pro debut in Winnipeg at the age of 14. When he made 
his way to the ring playing the bagpipes (his gimmick) the ring-announcer
introduced him as "Roddy the Piper", the fans heard it as “Roddy Piper”
and the name stuck.

Roddy came to the Pacific Northwest from California in late 1978-early
1979 where he signed with promoter Don Owen of Pacific Northwest
Wrestling, a part of Don Owen Sports which operated out of Portland,
Oregon. He won several championships before moving on to other pro-
wrestling organizations. Piper was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame
in 2005.

Roddy Piper, along with Don Coss, created Portland Wrestling Uncut, a
revival of the original Portland Wrestling in 2012.

Roddy Piper, the actor, starred in the 1988 John Carpenter film,
They Live. He also starred in the 1987 film Hell Comes to Frogtown
and guest-starred in an episode in the second season of the TV
series
Highlander (syndication).

FORMER CITY OFFICIAL HAS DIED AT 77

PORTLAND — Charles Jordan, Portland’s first African-American city
commissioner and director of the city’s Park and Recreation Bureau, 
passed away at his home Friday after a long undisclosed illness. He
was elected in 1974 and served 10 years on the council. He was also
Portland’s parks director for 14 years before retiring in 2003.

Singer, dancer, and actress Jane Powell (Suzanne Lorraine Burce)


Powell was born the only child to Paul E. Burce (a
Wonder Bread employee)
and Eileen Baker Burce (a housewife) in Portland, Oregon, At five, she was
on the KGW radio children’s talent program Stars of Tomorrow. She attended
Beaumont Grade School and Grant High School in Portland.

During the summer of 1943, Jane and her parents went on a vacation to
Hollywood. where she appeared on Janet Gaynor‘s radio show Hollywood
Showcase: Stars over Hollywood
. It was a talent competition, and Powell
won and soon auditioned with Louis B. Mayer at MGM as well as David O.
Selznick
. Without even taking a screen test, Powell was then signed to a
seven-year contract with MGM.

As of 2013, Powell lives with her fifth husband, former child star Dickie
Moore
, in New York City and Connecticut, and is still active in television
and theater.
