SHOW AIRED FOR THE LAST TIME ON THIS DATE IN 1954
The Railroad Hour was a radio series of musical dramas and comedies broadcast
from the late 1940s to the mid-1950s. The show was sponsored by the Association
of American Railroads and starred singer-actor Gordon MacRae. Marvin Miller was
the announcer of the series that began on ABC October 4, 1948 as a 45-minute
program, and was reduced to 30 minutes on April 25, 1949, continuing until
September 26, 1949. It then moved to NBC for a run from October 3, 1949, until
June 21, 1954. On both networks it aired Monday evenings at 8pm(et).The theme
song for the program was “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad”.
THE FCC FOUNDED ON THIS DATE IN 1934
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent agency
of the U.S. government. It was established by the Communications Act of
1934 as a successor to the Federal Radio Commission and is charged with
regulating all non-federal use of radio and television broadcasting, interstate telecommunications, wire, satellite and cable.
BUD COLLYER (JUNE 18, 1908–SEPT. 8, 1969)
Bud Collyer was a radio actor/announcer who became one of the nation’s
first major television game show stars. He is best remembered for his work
as the voice of Superman/Clark Kent in three media: radio, film and television.
Collyer’s best-remembered radio role arrived in early 1940: the title role in The Adventures of Superman on the Mutual Broadcasting System.
In 1956, Collyer became equally, if not more, familiar as the host of a
new Goodson-Todman production, To Tell The Truth, on CBS-TV.
Bud Collyer was host of Beat The Clock which ran on CBS from 1950
to 1958 and ABC from 1958-1961.
RADIO SHOW DEBUTED ON THIS DATE IN 1939
With Hugh Marlowe (below) in the title role, Ellery Queen was introduced in
The Adventures of Ellery Queen on CBS Radio on June 18, 1939. Between
1939-1948, the show was broadcast alternately on CBS, NBC and ABC. The
premise was that a mystery would be dramatized but then interrupted when a
panel of celebrities would attempt to solve the mystery. The Gulf Oil Company
was the first commercial sponsor of the show.
