COMEDIAN BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1880

W.C. Fields (William Claude Dukenfield)

(January 29, 1880 – December 25, 1946)

Fields was an early film comedian who obtained fame for his sardonic
wit in such films as The Bank Dick (1940) and My Little Chickadee with
Mae West (1940). Before fame he made a living as a pool player and
a juggler as a teen.

SHOW DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1956

Indictment! was a courtroom drama on CBS radio from 1956 through
1959. The show was based on the case files of former New York City 
Assistant District Attorney Eleazer Lipsky, it "presented the step-by-step
and tedious checking that went into a case before an indictment could
be obtained."

Nat Polen (below) played the part of Edward McCormick, ADA.  Polen
was better known for his role as Dr. James Craig on ABC-TV’s "One
Life to Live."

RADIO SHOW’S DEBUT ON THIS DAY IN 1956

FORT-LARAMIE-case-1

Fort Laramie was a radio Western series that aired Sunday afternoons at 
5:30pm (ET) on CBS from January 22 to October 28, 1956. Once a week
the cast and crew gathered at CBS Studio One in Hollywood to tape the
show. In 1956 this was the last radio production studio in use in California.

Produced and directed by Norman Macdonnell, the Western drama depicted
life at old Fort Laramie during the 19th Century. The 41 episodes starred
Raymond Burr as Lee Quince, captain of the cavalry. One year later, Burr
became a television star as Perry Mason.

Wolfman Jack (Robert Weston Smith) (January 21, 1938 – July 1, 1995)

The Wolfman was a Raspy rock ‘n’ roll radio and television disk jockey who was 
popular during the 60’s and 70’s. After selling encyclopedias door-to-door, he
began attending the National Academy of Broadcasting in Washington, D.C.,
where he graduated in 1960.

RADIO SOAP DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1938

The Story of Kay Fairchild, The Stepmother starred Sunda Love and ran on CBS
Radio from 1938 to 1942. It was a soap opera about the real life story of a woman
who raised another woman’s children. The show tells us of the hardship of fitting
in with the family and the trials and tribulations of dealing with in-laws. The show 
was sponsored by Colgate Tooth powder and Cashmere bouquet lotion.
