"Soul Man" was written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter. The song was
successful as a number 2 hit by Atlantic Records soul duo Sam & Dave.

Samuel David "Sam" Moore (above) will be 81 in October. Dave
Porter died in 1988 from injuries sustained in a automobile
accident.

was Cooke’s debut single and was a huge success, becoming a number- 
one hit on both Billboard‘s Rhythm & Blues Records chart and the Billboard
Hot 100
. The song was named as one of the 500 most important rock and
roll
recordings by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
. In April 2010, the song
ranked #115 in Rolling Stone magazine’s The 500 Greatest Songs of All
Time
.

1964, second single by Orbison to top the charts.

SINGLE RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1966

The song "Last Train to Clarksville" was written by the songwriting duo Tommy
Boyce and Bobby Hart and was the debut single by The Monkees. It topped the
Billboard Hot 100 on November 5, 1966. Lead vocals were done by the groups
drummer Micky Dolenz. Clarksville was featured in seven episodes of the
Monkees TV show; the most for any Monkees song.
