Roy Kelton Orbison  (April 23, 1936 – December 6, 1988)

The song "Oh, Pretty Woman" was a worldwide success for Roy Orbison. It
spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Billboard also 
ranked the record as the No. 4 song of 1964. The record sold seven million
copies.

Musicians on the record included Floyd Cramer on piano, Bob Moore on an
upright bass, Boots Randolph and Charlie McCoy on sax, and Buddy Harman
and Paul Garrison on drums. Guitar players included Billy Sanford, Jerry
Kennedy and Wayne Moss. Orbison also played a 12 string guitar.

SINGLE RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1964

On August 30th 1964, the Beatles’ "Matchbox" and the flip-side, "Slow Down",
both entered Billboard’s Hot Top 100 chart, "Matchbox" at position #81 and
"Slow Down" at #99. "Matchbox" would peak at #17for one week on October
11th, 1964, while "Slow Down" reached its highest position at #25 for one
week on October 4th, 1964.

There are suggestions that Carl Perkins, the writer of the song “Matchbox”, 
may have been present in the studio during the recording  session.

RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1969

"Honky Tonk Women" is distinctive as it opens not with a guitar riff, but 
with a beat played on a cowbell. The Rolling Stones’ producer Jimmy
Miller
performed the cowbell for the recording.

NUMBER-ONE SINGLE ON THIS DAY IN 1966

According to an English D.J.,McCartney wrote the song in response to a request
from an aunt who asked if he could "write a single that wasn’t about love.”

"Paperback Writer" was the last new song by the Beatles to be featured on their
final tour in 1966.
