became Avalon’s first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart,
where it spent five weeks atop the survey. The song also reached number
ten on the R&B chart. Al Martino was offered the song originally, but turned
it down.

"There Goes My Baby" was the first single by the second incarnation of the
Drifters, previously known as the 5 Crowns, who assumed the group name
in 1958 after manager George Treadwell fired the remaining members of
the original lineup. The Atlantic Records release was Ben E. King’s
debut recording as lead singer of the group.

NUMBER-ONE SONG ON THIS DAY IN 1965

The Temptations went to the top of the singles chart with the Smokey
Robinson penned "My Girl", making the group the first male act to have
a chart topper for Motown Records, the first single to feature David Ruffin
on lead vocals and the group’s first number-one hit. It became the groups
signature song. In 2004, "My Girl" was ranked number 88 on Rolling Stone ‘​s
list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
