KATEE SACKHOFF IS 31 TODAY

Actress Kathryn Ann "Katee" Sackhoff was born in Portland, Oregon
and grew up in St. Helens. She graduated from Sunset High School in
Beaverton in 1998. Katee is mainly known for playing Captain Kara
“Starbuck” Thrace on the Sci Fi channel’s television program Battlestar
Galactica
. In 2004 she was nominated for a Saturn Award in the "Best
Supporting Actress in a Television Series" category for her work in the
Battlestar Galactica miniseries. In May 2006, she won the Saturn Award
for the same role. She starred in the eighth season of 24 on FOX as
Dana Walsh. In the fall of 2010, Sackhoff joined the cast of CSI: Crime
Scene Investigation
as Detective Reed.

LEONARD NIMOY IS 80 YEARS OLD TODAY

Leonard Simon Nimoy is a actor, film director, poet, musician and photographer. His most famous role is that of Spock in the original Star Trek series 1966–1969, multiple films, television and video game sequels. Nimoy began his career in his early twenties, teaching acting classes in Hollywood and making minor film and television appearances through the 1950s, as well as playing the title role in the 1952 boxing movie Kid Monk Baroni . In 1965, he made his first appearance in the rejected Star Trek pilot, "The
Cage", and would go on to play the character of Mr. Spock until 1969, followed by
seven further films and a number of guest slots in various sequels. His character of
Spock resulted in three Emmy Award nominations; TV Guide named Spock one of the
50 greatest TV characters. Nimoy also had a recurring role in Mission: Impossible as 
well as several well-received stage appearances.

ASTRONAUT JIM LOVELL IS 83 TODAY

James "Jim" Arthur Lovell, Jr., is a former NASA astronaut and a retired captain
in the U.S. Navy, most famous as the commander of the Apollo 13 mission, which
suffered a critical failure en route to the Moon but was brought back safely to
Earth by the efforts of the crew and mission control. Lovell was also the command
module pilot of Apollo 8, the first Apollo mission to enter lunar orbit. Lovell is a
recipient of the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal
of Freedom. He is one of only 24 people to have flown to the Moon, the first of
only three people to fly to the Moon twice, and the only one to do so without
making a landing. Lovell was also the first American to fly in space four times.

THE FATHER OF THE U.S. SPACE PROGRAM ~ BORN ON THIS DATE IN 1912

Wernher von Braun  was a German born rocket scientist, engineer, space architect,
and one of the leading figures in the development of rocket technology in Germany  
and the United States during and after World War ll. A former member of the Nazi  
Party and a commissioned SS officer, von Braun would later be regarded as the 
preeminent rocket engineer of the 20th century in his role with the U.S. civilian
space agency NASA. In 1955, ten years after entering this country, Von Braun
became a naturalized citizen. He lead the development of the Saturn V booster
rocket that helped land the first men on the Moon in 1969. Von Braun received the
National Medal of Science in 1975. He died on June 16, 1977 of pancreatic cancer 
at the age of 65.
