ROCKWELL ART UP FOR AUCTION
NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City auctioneer says a Norman Rockwell painting
of Boston Red Sox players could bring up to $30 million.
The painting appeared on the cover of the March 2, 1957, issue of the Saturday
Evening Post. The title is: "The Rookie (Red Sox Locker Room)." Christie’s is
offering it today with a pre-sale estimate of $20 million to $30 million.
The painting shows pitcher Frank Sullivan, right fielder Jackie Jensen, catcher
Sammy White, second baseman Billy Goodman and Hall of Famer Ted Williams.
AN ELECTRONIC STORES BEGINNING
The first custom concept store opened in the company’s hometown
of Fort Worth, Texas.
Radio Shack Corporation (formerly Tandy Corporation) is a franchise of
electronics retail stores in the United States, as well as parts of Europe,
South America and Africa. The company was started as Radio Shack in
1921 by two brothers,Theodore and Milton Deutschmann, who wanted
to provide equipment for the fans of amateur, or ham, radio.
Radio Shack was purchased by the Tandy Corporation in 1962. It was
originally a leather goods corporation, and renamed Tandy Radio Shack
& Leather. Tandy eventually divested itself of its non-electronic product
lines.
The company issued its first catalog in 1939. as it entered the high-fidelity
music market. In 1954, Radio Shack began selling its own private-label
products under the brand name Realist, but was subsequently sued and
consequently changed the brand name to Realistic.
Radio Shack was created in Boston by brothers, Theodore and
Milton Deutschmann who had emigrated from London.

FIRST SHOPPING CART ON THIS DAY IN 1937
One of the first shopping carts was introduced by Sylvan Goldman,
(below) owner of the Piggly Wiggly supermarket chain in Oklahoma
City. The cart was a simple metal folding frame that held two wire
baskets. Goldman called his carts “folding basket carriers”. A store
mechanic at Piggly Wiggly developed a method to mass produce
the carts by inventing an assembly line capable of forming and
welding the wire baskets.
