Hiram Rhodes Revels, a Republican from Natchez, Mississippi, 
was sworn into the U.S. Senate, becoming the first African
American ever to sit in Congress.

During the Civil War, Revels, a college-educated minister,
helped form African American army regiments for the Union
cause, started a school for freed men, and served as a
chaplain for the Union army.

(AP) – Singer Roberta Flack, known for the hit Killing Me Softly,
has died . 

Her manager, Suzanne Koga, stated she died from cardiac arrest
on her way to the hospital in Manhattan.

Actor William George Zane Jr. was born in Chicago. His
breakthrough role was in the 1989 Australian film Dead
Calm, a performance that earned him a nomination for
the Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Most
Promising Actor.

He has since appeared in numerous films and television
series, and starred as the main antagonist Caledon Hockley
in the epic film Titanic (1997), for which he and the rest of
the ensemble cast was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild
