FUTURE PRESIDENT FILED UFO REPORT
Future President Jimmy Carter filed a report with the
International UFO Bureau on September 18, 1973,
claiming he had seen an Unidentified Flying Object
(UFO) in October 1969.
During the presidential campaign of 1976, Democratic
challenger Carter was forthcoming about his belief that
he had seen a UFO. He described waiting outside for a
Lion’s Club Meeting in Leary, Georgia, to begin, at about
7:30 p.m., when he spotted what he called “the darndest
thing I’ve ever seen” in the sky.
Carter, as well as 10 to 12 other people who witnessed
the same event, described the object as “very bright
[with] changing colors and about the size of the moon.”
Carter reported that “the object hovered about 30 degrees
above the horizon and moved in toward the earth and away
before disappearing into the distance.” He later told a
reporter that, after the experience, he vowed never again
to ridicule anyone who claimed to have seen a UFO.
FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN MISS AMERICA
On September 17, 1983, 20-year-old Vanessa Williams became
the first Black woman to win the Miss America crown. Less
than a year later, on July 23, 1984, Williams gave up her crown
after nude photos of her surfaced.
Despite the scandal, Williams later launched a successful
singing and acting career, including a featured role on the
television sitcom Ugly Betty.
A JACKSON 5 BROTHER HAS DIED AT AGE 70
Toriano Adaryll “Tito” Jackson, one of the brothers who made
up the beloved pop group the Jackson 5, has died.
On September 15, , Jackson suffered a heart attack while on a
business road trip in Gallup, New Mexico and died a local
hospital.
Tito was the third of nine Jackson children, which include
global superstars Michael and sister Janet, part of a music-
making family whose songs are still beloved today.
