Ernest Borgnine is an actor of both television and film. His career has spanned more than six decades. He was an unconventional lead in many films of the 1950s, including his Academy Award-winning role in the 1955 film Marty. On television, he is best known for playing Quinton McHale in the 1962-66 ABC series McHales Navy, costarring in the mid-1980s action series Air wolf, and voicing the character Mermaid Man in the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants. Borgnine earned an Emmy nomination at age 92 for his work on the series ER on NBC from 1994 to 2009. In August 2009 he earned the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhode Island International Film Festival.

THE CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH BEGAN ON THIS DATE IN 1848
The California Gold Rush (1848–1855) began when gold was discovered by James W. Marshall (above) at Sutter’s Mill, in northern California at Coloma. News of the discovery
brought some 300,000 people to California from vast parts of the United States and abroad.Some became quite wealthy, but many returned home with little more than what
they started with. The effects of the Gold Rush resulted in San Francisco growing from a small settlement to a boomtown. A state constitution was written and California became
a state in 1850 as part of the compromise of 1850.
JOHN BELUSHI WAS BORN ON THE DATE IN 1949
John Adam Belushi was a comedian, actor, and musician, best known as one of the original cast members of the NBC-TV comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live in the early 1970’s and for his roles in the films National Lampoon’s Animal House(1978)
and The Blues Brother(1980). He died of a drug overdose on March 5, 1982 at
the age of 33. John was the older brother of Jim Belushi.

NEIL DIAMOND TURNED 70 TODAY
Neil Leslie Diamond is a successful pop music singer-songwriter who scored a number of hits worldwide in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. In terms of Billboard chart success, he is the third most successful Adult Contemporary artist ever, ranking only behind Barbra Streisand and Elton John. Diamond continues to tour successfully, and maintains a very loyal following. Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984, in 2000
he received the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award, and is soon to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
JOHN HANCOCK ~ BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1737
John Hancock was a merchant, statesman, and prominent patriot of the American Revolution. He served as president of the Second Continental Congress and was the first and third Governor of the commonwealth of Massachusetts. As president of the Congress, Hancock was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence. Hancock died on October 8, 1793, at 56 years of age.
