CAPONE BEHIND BARS ON THIS DATE IN 1932
Alphonse Gabriel "Al" Capone (January 17, 1899 – January 25, 1947) was a prohibition-era gangster who led a crime syndicate known as the "Capones". Bureau of Prohibition agent Eliot Ness began an investigation of Capone in 1929. However, it was Frank J. Wilson, an agent of the Treasury Department, who conducted an investigation into Capone’s income tax violations that led to a indictment for income tax evasion in
1931. Following a long trial, Capone was found guilty and given an 11-year sentence along with stiff fines and liens on his various properties. After an appeal was denied, Capone was sent to Atlanta U.S. Penitentiary where he was later transferred to
Alcatraz on August 11, 1934.
