In order to make some money while in high school, Jerry Vale he took a job shining
shoes in a barbershop in New York City. He sang while he shined shoes, and his
boss liked the sound so well that he paid for music lessons for the boy. Vale soon
started singing in high school musicals which let to night club gigs, including one
that lasted for three years. It was there that Jerry was discovered by songwriter
Paul Insetta, who was also a road manager for singer Guy Mitchell. He was signed
to a management contract, made some demo recordings for Columbia Records and,
as they say, the rest is history. His version of the National Anthem, recorded in the
late 1960s, was a fixture at sporting events for many years. Vale and Rita, his wife
of over forty years, reside in Palm Desert, California.
