RADIO SHOW DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1941
The NBC radio comedy “The Great Gildersleeve” premiered on August
31, 1941 and aired until 1957. The show, starring Harold Peary (above)
as Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, followed his adventures raising his
niece Marjorie, played by Lurene Tuttle and her young brother Leroy,
played by Walter Tetley. Another popular cast member was Birdie the
family cook, played by Lillian Randolph.
THE OLD READHEAD WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1903
Arthur Godfrey (August 31, 1903 – March 16, 1983)
Arthur Godfrey was a pioneer radio and television broadcast entertainer
who enjoyed prominent success during the 1950s. He was at the helm of
two CBS-TV weekly series and a daily 90-minute television mid-morning
show through most of the decade. Godfrey was one of the early masters
of the commercial pitch. He identified with many of his sponsors such as
Lipton Tea and soup.
Arthur Godfrey Time (above) was a Monday-Friday radio show that ran
until 1972 on CBS.
RICHARD GERE IS 62 TODAY
Richard Gere began his acting career in the 1970s, playing a supporting role
in Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977), and he had a starring role in Days of
Heaven (1978). He became well known for his role in American Gigolo
(1980), which established him as a leading man. Gere then stared in
several hit films including An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Pretty
Woman (1990), Primal Fear (1996), and the musical film Chicago
(2002), for which he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor,
as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the Best Cast.
NUMBER ONE ON THIS DAY IN 1963
“My Boyfriend’s Back” was originally intended as a demo for The
Shirelles, but ended up being released by The Angels. The single
spent three weeks at number one on the Hot 100 chart of Billboard,
and number two on Billboard’s R&B chart.
