CANDID CAMERA DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1948

Candid Camera is a reality television series of practical jokes performed in
front of a hidden camera with unsuspecting participants. She show, created
and produced by Allen Funt (above), initially began on radio as Candid
Microphone
June 28, 1947. After a series of theatrical film shorts, also titled
Candid Microphone, Funt brought his concept to ABC television on August
10, 1948 with announcer Ken Roberts. He hosted or co-hosted almost all
of the TV versions until 1993 when he suffered a stroke and never
recovered. His son Peter Funt, who had co-hosted specials with his
father since 1987, became the producer and host of the show.

SERIAL KILLER CAPTURED ON THIS DATE IN 1977

David Richard Berkowitz (born Richard David Falco; June 1, 1953), also
known as Son of Sam and the .44 Caliber Killer, is a serial killer and arsonist
who terrorized New York City from July 1976 until his arrest on August 10,
1977. Berkowitz confessed to killing six people and wounding several others
in the course of  eight shootings in New York. His first words upon arrest were
reported to be, “You got me. What took you so long?” On June 12, 1978, he
was sentenced to 25 years-to-life in prison for the murders, making his
maximum term 365 years. He was first imprisoned at the Attica Correctional
and is currently being held at Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg,
New York.

SMOKEY BEAR IS 67 YEARS OLD TODAY

 Smokey’s debut poster was released on August 9, 1944

Smokey Bear, sometimes referred to as Smokey the Bear or simply Smokey
is a mascot for the U.S. Forest Service. The campaign was created by The
Advertising Council to help educate the public about the dangers of forest
fires. The initial slogan was, “Smokey Says-Care will prevent 9 out of 10
Forest Fires” and was changed in 1947 to, “Remember…Only You Can
Prevent Forest Fires”. According to the Ad Council, Smokey Bear and
his message are recognized by 95% of adults and 77% of children in
the U.S.

In 2001, the poster slogan was officially amended to replace "forest
fires" with "wildfires," as a reminder that other areas ,such as
grasslands are also in danger of burning.

CARTOON CHARACTER IS 81 YEARS OLD TODAY

BETTY BOOP 

Betty Boop is an animated cartoon character created by Max Fleischer (below). She originally appeared in the Talkartoon and Betty Boop film series, which were produced
by Fleischer Studios and released by Paramount Pictures. She has also been featured
in comic strips and mass merchandising. Despite having been toned down in the mid-1930s to appear more modest, she became one of the most well-known and popular cartoon characters in the world. Betty Boop made her first appearance on August 9,
1930, in the cartoon Dizzy Dishes. Singer Helen Kane was the model for Boop.

FORMER CASH BAND MEMBER IS DEAD AT 83

JONESBORO, Ark (AP) – Marshall Grant, a longtime member of country music
superstar Johnny Cash’s original band, the Tennessee Two, has died in Arkansas
at age 83.

Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn., said Grant died
Sunday.

A spokeswoman at St. Bernard’s Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro, Ark., did
not immediately return a phone call seeking comment and a cause of death was not immediately available.

Funeral services are pending.
