David Mason

It was 40-year-old David Mason (above) who recorded the piccolo trumpet
solo for The Beatle’s "Penny Lane" at Abbey Road Studios in London. The
trumpet he used was sold at a auction for $10,846 in August of 1987. In
2004, Rolling Stone listed “Penny Lane” at #449 on its 500 Greatest
Songs of All Time.

The above receipt, dated June 9, 1954, was for a two-sided acetate recording made
by Elvis Presley. Sun records studio was originally called Memphis Recording Service
opening in January of 1950.

DAVID SEVILLE DIED ON THIS DAY IN 1972

DAVID SEVILLE

David Seville (Ross Bagdasarian)  January 27, 1919 – January 16, 1972

Seville was a pianist, singer/songwriter, actor and record producer. He provided
the voices of the cartoon characters the Chipmunks. He also recorded the #1
hit “Witch Doctor” in 1958.

Seville played minor roles in films, the best known of which is his appearance in
Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 murder mystery Rear Window Starring James Stewart,
where he portrays a piano-playing songwriter living in the apartment complex
depicted in the film. David Seville died just days short of his 53 birthday.

CHIPMUNKS

Seville created the the voices of the Chipmunks using various recording
techniques.
