FILM ICON BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1901
Frank James (Gary) Cooper (May 7, 1901 – May 13, 1961)
Cooper’s career spanned from 1925 until shortly before his death in
1961, with more than one hundred films to his credit. He received five
Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, winning twice for Sergeant
York and High Noon. He also received an Honorary Award in 1961 from
the Academy.
The American Film Institute’s 100 Years…100 Stars ranked cooper at
#11 among males from the Classical Hollywood cinema period. In 2003,
his performances as Will Kane in High Noon (1952), Lou Gehrig in The
Pride of the Yankees (1942), and Alvin York in Sergeant York (1941)
made the AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Heroes and Villains list, all of them
as heroes.
AN UPDATE ON JOHNNY CRAWFORD
Johnny first performed before a national audience as a
Mouseketeer on The Mickey Mouse Club, ABC-TV
Chuck Connors and Johnny Crawford in The Rifleman, on
ABC 1958 to 1963.
Since 1992, Johnny Crawford has led a California-based vintage dance orchestra (above) for special events. His band has been sponsored by the Playboy Jazz
Festival, and has been the repeated choice for 15 annual Art Directors Guild
Awards at the Beverly Hilton. A remastered version of the orchestra’s highly
rated first album, "Sweepin’ the Clouds Away," was officially released on
September 30, 2011. Johnny turned 66 on March 26.
Johnny Crawford’s recording career produced five Top 40 hits,
including the single "Cindy’s Birthday," which peaked at #8 on
Billboard’s Top 40 in 1962.
COMPOSER BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1833
Johannes Brahms ( May 7, 1833 – April 3, 1897)
Brahms was a German composer and pianist, and one of the leading
musicians of the Romantic period. He is best known for his lullaby (1868).
The style of Brahms’s works was a starting point and an inspiration for a
generation of composers.
