FINAL SPIKE DRIVEN ON THIS DAY IN 1869
The National Park Service established the Golden Spike National Historic
Site in 1957
A golden spike is ceremonially driven, completing the first transcontinental
railroad, at Promontory Point, Utah. Pictured on the left is the Central Pacific locomotive, on the right the Union Pacific engine.
A replica of the Golden Spike on display at the National
Historic site’s visitor center. The original is at Stanford
University in Palo Alto, Calf.
