ARTHUR GODFREY FOR CBS TUBES ~ 1955
PLANET DISCOVERED ON THIS DAY IN 1846
Neptune, the 8th planet from the sun
German observatory astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle (above)
discovered the planet Neptune. He was assisted by Urbain Jean
Joseph Le Verrier (below) a French mathematician who specialized
in celestial mechanics. Neptune was named by Le Verrier after the
Roman mythological god of the sea.
MICKEY ROONEY IS 92 TODAY
Mickey Rooney (Joseph Yule, Jr.) has been working as a performer
since he was a child. He was a superstar as a teenager for the films
in which he played Andy Hardy, and has one of the longest careers
of any actor to date spanning 90 years actively making films in ten
decades (1920s to 2010s).
Mickey Rooney has received numerous awards,including a Juvenile
Academy Award, an Honorary Academy Award, two Golden Globes
and an Emmy Award.
THE FIRST ‘’BIG BUG’’ FILM
Them!, was Warner Brothers’ highest grossing film of 1954 and was the first
motion picture to have “monsters” generated by mutations due to nuclear
activity. It was nominated for an Oscar for Special Effects and won a Golden Reel Award for Best Sound Editing. Leonard Nimoy appears as an Air Force sergeant (below) in the Communications Room (uncredited).
