BROADWAY PLAY OPENED ON THIS DAY IN 1958

The original Broadway production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, a play by Tennessee Williams,opened at the Morosco Theater in New York. It was directed Elia Kazan
and starred Barbara Bel Geddes as Maggie; Ben Gazzara as Brick; and Burl
Ives as Big Daddy. The play had 694 performances and won the Pulitzer
Prize for Drama in 1955.

ALBUM CHART DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1956

When Billboard magazine premiered a weekly Best-Selling Popular Albums chart,
the position count varied anywhere from 10 to 30 albums. The first number-one
album on the new weekly list was Belafonte by Harry Belafonte.The chart was
renamed to Best-Selling Pop Albums later in 1956, and then to Best-Selling
Pop LPs in 1957. The chart is now titled the Billboard 200.

Early on the morning of Monday, March 24, 1958, Elvis Presley, accompanied by his 
parents and a group of family and friends, reported to the Memphis Draft Board and
from there, he and twelve other recruits were bused to Kennedy Veterans Memorial 
Hospital where he was given a physical, sworn in and then taken to Fort Chaffee, Arkansas for further processing.
