RNS-BAY-PSALTER

NEW YORK (AP) –  A tiny book of psalms from 1640 has sold for $14.2
million in New York City, setting an auction record for a printed book.

The Bay Psalm Book is believed to be the first book printed in what’s
now the United States. Only 11 copies survive in varying degrees of
completeness.

The book sold at Sotheby’s auction house in Manhattan on Tuesday
evening was one of two copies held by Boston’s Old South Church.

It was bought by American businessman and philanthropist David
Rubenstein, who plans to lend it to libraries around the country. Its
presale estimate was $15 million to $30 million.

A copy of John James Audubon’s "Birds of America" was the previous
record-holder. It sold for $11.5 million at Sotheby’s in 2010.

NEWSPAPER CELEBRATES 152 YEARS !

STARS AND STRIPES 2

 1st stars and stripes
First issue of the Stars and Stripes newspaper

Stars and Stripes is a newspaper that reports on matters concerning members of the
United States Armed Forces. It operates from inside the Department of Defense, but
is editorially separate from it, and its First Amendment protection is safeguarded by
Congress. It is a non-appropriated fund organization, only partially subsidized by the
Department of Defense. A large portion of its operating costs is earned through the
sale of advertising and subscriptions.

The history of the newspaper dates back to November 9, 1861, when during the
Civil War, soldiers of the 11th, 18th, and 29th Illinois Regiments set up camp in Bloomfield, Missouri. Finding the office of the local newspaper empty, they then
decided to print a newspaper about their activities. They called it the Stars and
Stripes
. Today, the Stars & Stripes Museum/Library Association is located in
Bloomfield.
