Melvin James Brooks (Kaminsky) is 90 today.

Mel Brooks belongs to an exclusive club of entertainers as the
recipient of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. As a teenager,
he was taught the drums by the great Buddy Rich. In 1961, his
comedy career took a big step forward when he and fellow comic
legend Carl Reiner created a comedy sketch called The 2000
Year Old Man.

ACTOR JOHN CUSACK IS 50 TODAY


John Paul Cusack was born in Evanston, Illinois.

Iconic ’80s actor John Cusack is known for starring in films such as
Say Anything (1989), The Sure Thing (1987), Sixteen Candles (1984),
and Gross Pointe Blank (1987). His other major films include High
Fidelity
(2000) for which he was nominated for the Golden Globe
Award/Best Actor –
 Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. He became
a member of the Piven Theatre Workshop in Chicago while attending
grade school. John Cusack’s sister is actress Joan Cusack, with whom
he has starred in multiple films.

TV SERIES 50th ANNIVERSARY TODAY


Dark Shadows
is a gothic soap opera that originally aired weekdays on 
the ABC television network, from June 27, 1966, to April 2, 1971. The
series depicted the lives of the Collins family of Collinsport, Maine.

The show became extremely popular when vampire Barnabas Collins,
played by Canadian actor Jonathan Frid, appeared a year into its run.

Dark Shadows featured an array of characters including ghosts, witches,
werewolves, zombies, and warlocks. Time travel and a parallel universe 
were also featured. Some characters were played by more than one actor.

ACTIVIST BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1880



Helen Adams Keller
(June 27, 1880 – June 1, 1968)

Helen Keller, though deaf and blind, became a women’s suffragist and
political activist. She published twelve books and a number of articles
over the coarse of her life.

She contracted a disease when she was nineteen months old (likely
scarlet fever or meningitis) that left her blind and deaf. As a young
child, she developed a repertoire of physical signs which she used
to communicate with her parents and with the young daughter of the
Keller family’s cook.

Helen Keller become widely known through the dramatic depictions of 
a 1959 play and the 1962 film The Miracle Worker.
