James Earl Carter Jr. (October 1, 1924 – December 29, 2024)

The 39th president of the United States.

The Carter Center  announced in a statement made today,
Jimmy Carter passed away peacefully Dec. 29 at his home
in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family.  

Carter, the oldest living U.S. president of all time, died less
than three months after his 100th birthday and more than
a year after the Carter Center said he had opted to receive
hospice care at home with his family after "a series of short
hospital stays."

His specific cause of death was unclear. Carter’s death
followed the passing of his wife Rosalynn on Nov. 19,
2023. She died at the age of 96.

On December 29, 1778, British Lieutenant Colonel Archibald
Campbell and his force of between 2,500 and 3,600 troops,
which included the 71st Highland regiment, New York
Loyalists, and Hessian mercenaries, launched a surprise
attack on American forces defending Savannah, Georgia.

On December 28, 1895, the world’s first commercial movie
screening took place at the Grand Cafe in Paris. The film
was made by Louis and Auguste Lumière, two French
brothers who developed a camera-projector called the
Cinematographe.

On December 28, the entrepreneurial siblings screened a 
series of short scenes from everyday French life and they

and projecting, capable of projecting images on a

Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. is 70 years old today.

Washington is an actor, producer, and director. Known for 
dramatic roles on stage and screen, The New York Times
named him the greatest actor of the 21st century in 2020.

He has received several accolades, including two Academy
Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and a Tony Award as
well as nominations for two Emmy Awards and a Grammy
Award.
