Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige (July 7, 1906 – June 8, 1982)

On February 9, 1971, pitcher Leroy “Satchel” Paige became the
first Negro League veteran to be
nominated for the Baseball
Hall of Fame.

In August of that year, Paige, a pitching legend known for his
fastball, showmanship and the longevity of his playing career,
which spanned five decades, was inducted. Joe DiMaggio (‘’the
Yankee Clipper”) once called Paige “the best and fastest pitcher
I’ve ever faced.”

STEAK MAY BE ADDED TO STATE SYMBOLS

SALEM, Ore. (KATU) – Oregon, known for its state bird, nut,
and beverage, may soon add a state steak its state symbols smorgasbord.

State Republican Senator Todd Nash (above) is among the
sponsors of a resolution to designate the T-bone as Oregon’s
state steak.

In addition, Oregon’s state tree is the Douglas-fir, state flower
being
Oregon Grape, and square dancing as state dance.

Nash is the owner of a small cattle ranch in Enterprise, Oregon.

The first Super Bowl game, then called the AFL-NFL
World Championship Game, was played at the Los
Angeles Memorial Coliseum on January 15, 1967.          

       
Broadcast on two television networks and played
before
less than a sellout crowd, the game saw
the NFL’s
Green Bay Packers defeat the AFL’s
Kansas City Chiefs, 35–10.         

The name “Super Bowl” first appeared in 1969, as
did the
use of Roman numerals.
