William Shatner is a Canadian born actor. In a career spanning
seven decades, he is best known for his portrayal of James T.
Kirk in the Star Trek franchise, from his 1966 debut as the
captain of the starship Enterprise in the second pilot of the
first Star Trek television series to his final appearance as
Captain Kirk in the seventh Star Trek feature film, Star Trek
Generations (1994).
On March 15, 1972, The Godfather—a three-hour epic
chronicling the lives of the Corleones, an Italian-
American crime family led by the powerful Vito
Corleone (Marlon Brando)—was released in theaters.
The Godfather was adapted from the best-selling book
of the same name by Mario Puzo, a novelist who grew
up in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen and got his start
writing pulp stories for men’s magazines. Controversy
surrounded the film from the beginning: Soon after
Paramount Pictures announced its production, the
Italian-American Civil Rights League held a rally in
Madison Square Garden, claiming the film would
amount to a slur against Italian Americans. The
uproar only increased publicity for the movie.

Neil Simon Broadway play The Odd Couple debuted in 1965
and starred Walter Matthau (who would go to play the same
role in the film) and Art Carney as Felix Ungar. Matthau won
a Tony award for his portrayal, one of a slew of accolades

Actor Robert Blake, best known as the star of the 1970s TV drama
Baretta and the crime film In Cold Blood (1967), died Thursday at
his home in Los Angeles. He had long-term heart issues and spent
the last few years listening to jazz music, playing his guitar and
watching classic movies.
Rawhide is a Western TV series starring Eric Fleming and Clint Eastwood. The show aired for eight seasons on the CBS
network on Friday nights, from January 9, 1959, to September
3, 1965, before moving to Tuesday nights from September 14,
1965, until December 7, 1965, with a total of 217 black-and-white episodes. The series was produced and sometimes directed by
Charles Marquis Warren, who also produced early episodes of Gunsmoke. The show is fondly remembered by many for its
theme, "Rawhide".
Spanning 7+1⁄2 years, Rawhide was the sixth-longest running
American television Western, exceeded only by 8 years of
Wagon Train, 9 years of The Virginian, 14 years of Bonanza,
18 years of Death Valley Days, and 20 years of Gunsmoke.
