Ringo Starr (Sir Richard Starkey) the former
drummer with The Beatles is 84 today.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — 30 years ago today, 14 firefighters,
including nine members of the Prineville Hotshots, lost their
lives in the Storm King Mountain fire in Glenwood Springs,
Colorado.

On July 6th, a dry cold front moved through the area,
increasing the winds and activity.

The fire quickly progressed past the fire lines and began to
close in on the firefighter’s location to the west and began
to race toward them up the steep terrain.

On July 6, 1957, Althea Gibson claimed the women’s singles
tennis title at Wimbledon and became the first African
American to win a championship at London’s All England
Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

Gibson survived a heart attack, but died
shortly after from complications following
respiratory and bladder infections.

On July 6, 1994, the movie Forrest Gump, a comedy-drama film,
opened in theaters. A huge box-office success, the film stars
Tom Hanks in the title role of Forrest, a good-hearted man with
a low I.Q. who winds up at the center of key cultural and historical
events of the second half of the 20th century.

Forrest Gump was based on a 1986 novel of the same name by
Winston Groom who himself grew up in Alabama and served in
the Army during Vietnam.

On July 5, 1975, Arthur Ashe defeated the heavily favored Jimmy Connors to became the first African-American male ever to win Wimbledon, the most coveted championship in tennis.
