ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON THIS DAY IN 1981
IT’S THE BIRTHDAY OF THE 16th PRESIDENT
Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865)
The earliest known observance of Lincoln’s birthday occurred in Buffalo, New York,
in 1874. Julius Francis, a Buffalo druggist, made it his life’s mission to honor the
slain president. He repeatedly petitioned Congress to establish Lincoln’s birthday
as a legal holiday.

Three year old “John-John” salutes the passing casket of his father
On the Sunday (Nov. 24th) after the assassination, President Kennedy’s coffin
was carried on a horse-drawn caisson to the U.S. Capitol to lie in state. During
the day and night, hundreds of thousands lined up to view the guarded casket.
The riderless (Caparisoned) horse wearing the cavalry saddle, the sword and
backwards boots in the stirrups, symbolizing the end of Kennedy’s tenure.
