On this day in 1943 during World War II, the Soviets announced that
they had broken the Nazi siege of Leningrad, which had began in September of 1941. As many as 200,000 Soviet soldiers were killed between September 1941 and May 1943 in the fighting.

On January 18, 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin puts flowers
on a monument at Nevsky Pyatachok near Kirovsk, marking the 75th
anniversary of the battle that broke the Seige of Leningrad, in St.
Petersburg, Russia.
 

On this day in 1912, after a two-month ordeal, the expedition of
British explorer Robert Falcon Scott (above) arrives at the South
Pole only to find that Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian explorer,
had preceded them by just over a month. Disappointed, the
exhausted explorers prepared for a long and difficult journey
back to their base camp.

This notebook spent 100 years buried in Antarctic ice, left there by explorer Robert Falcon Scott.

Hattie Ophelia Wyatt Caraway (February 1, 1878 – December 21, 1950)

Hattie W. Caraway became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate
when Arkansas Governor Harvey Parnell appointed Caraway to fill
her late husband Thaddeus’ seat; her appointment was formally confirmed by a special election held on this day in 1932.
 

On this day in 1971, the television sitcom "All In the Family" debuted
on CBS-TV. It is often regarded as one of the greatest TV series of
all time. It soon became the most watched show during summer
reruns and afterwards ranked number one in the yearly Neilsen
ratings from 1971 to 1976. TV Guide ranked “All in the Family” 
as the fourth-greatest show of all time. The final original show
was April 8, 1979.

Actor Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. is 63 years old today.

Denzel Washington won an Academy Award for Best Actor for
his role in the 2001 film Training Day. He has starred in several
films based on true events such as Remember the Titans (2000), 
Cry Freedom (1987), American Gangster (2007), Flight (2012), 
and Malcolm X (1992).

most of the English town of Coventry when about 500 Luftwaffe
bombers attacked.
