his release in 1994, he became South Africa’s first black chief executive, an
office he served for five years. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993
while he was still in prison.

EYE LOST IN ACCIDENT ON THIS DAY IN 1954

Sammy Davis Jr nearly lost his life in an automobile accident in San Bernardino,
California
. The impact of the crash had driven Sammy’s face into the steering
wheel, and his left eye was forced out of its socket by the bullet-shaped horn
button at the center of the wheel of his 1954 Cadillac. After wearing an eye
patch for years, he was fitted with a glass eye.

JOHNNY HORTON DIED ON THIS DAY IN 1960

John LaGale "Johnny" Horton (April 30, 1925 – November 5, 1960).

On the night of November 4–5, 1960, country music and rockabilly singer 
Johnny Horton and two other band members were travelling from Austin,
Texas to Shreveport when they collided with an oncoming truck on a bridge
near Milano, Texas. Horton died en route to hospital. The two band members
survived, having received various injuries. 

When Johnny Cash, a good friend of Horton’s, learned about the accident
he said, “I locked myself in one of the hotel’s barrooms and cried.”

Jayne Mansfield (born Vera Jayne Palmer; April 19, 1933 – June 29, 1967)

Actress, singer, and sex symbol Jayne Mansfield had numerous Hollywood
credits including “The Girl Can’t Help It” (1956), and “The Wayward Bus”
(1957).

As a child, Mansfield was a talented pianist and violinist who would often
give impromptu concerts in her family’s driveway.

Mansfield was only 34 when she died of head injuries received in an automobile
accident while on her way to an early-morning TV interview in New Orleans.
