NEW YORK (AP) – Emmy-winning actress and singer Polly Bergen, who in a long career played the terrorized wife in the original "Cape Fear" (1962) and the first woman president in 1964’s "Kisses for My President," died Saturday.
According to her publicist Judy Katz, Bergen died at her home in Southbury, Connecticut, from natural causes. She was surrounded by family and close friends.
In recent years, she played Felicity Huffman’s mother on ABC’s "Desperate Housewives" (2007-2011) and the past mistress of Tony Soprano’s late father on HBO’s "The Sopranos." (1999-2007).
The Waltons won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series in 1973. Also in 1973 Richard Thomas won the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Michael Learned won the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series three times in 1973, 1974, and 1976. Ellen Corby was also a three-time winner in the Supporting Actress category, winning in 1973, 1975, and 1976. Will Geer was awarded the Supporting Actor Emmy in 1975. The series also earned a Peabody Award for its first season.
Patsy Cline was one of the most influential, successful and acclaimed female vocalists of the 20th century. She died in a multiple fatality crash of her private plane at the age of 30.
According to her 1973 Country Music Hall of Fame plaque, "Her heritage of timeless recordings is testimony to her artistic capacity."
