PRIME TIME SOAP DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1964

Peyton Place is a prime time soap opera, based upon the 1956 novel of the
same name by Grace Metalious, which aired on ABC-TV in half-hour episodes
from September 15, 1964 to June 2, 1969. The show was produced by 20th
Century Fox Television and was the only prime time series ever to run episodes continuously without reruns. Many guest stars appeared in the series for extended
times, such as Dan Duryea, Susan Oliver, Leslie Nielsen, Gena Rowland’s and Lee
Grant, who won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Drama. The series helped launch the careers of such actors
as Mia Farrow (above), Ryan O’Neal, Chris Connelly, and Mariette Hartley.

Actor Tommy Lee Jones was born in San Saba, Texas and moved to New
York to become an actor, making his Broadway debut in 1969’s A Patriot
for Me
. In 1970, he landed his first film role playing a college student in
Love Story.
His best known films include The Fugitive (1993) and it’s
sequel U.S. Marshals (1998), the Men in Black films (1997 & 2002),
The Hunted
( filmed in Portland -2003), and No Country for Old Men
(2007). A second sequel to Men in Black, Men in Black lll, is scheduled
for release in 2012. Tommy Lee Jones has received three Academy
nominations, winning one as Best Supporting Actor for The Fugitive.

THE DEBUT OF ‘’LASSIE’’ ON THIS DAY IN 1954

The television series Lassie followed the adventures of a female Collie named
Lassie and her human companions. The show debuted on Sunday, September
12, 1954 and aired till March 24, 1973 on the CBS network. It was one of the
longest running dramatic series on TV, with seventeen seasons before entering
first-run syndication for the final two seasons. Lassie was initially filmed in black
and white, making the transition to color in 1965. It was the created by producer
Robert Maxwell and animal trainer Rudd Weatherwax. In its first years Lassie
won two Emmy Awards and its stars, Jan Clayton and June Lockhart were both
nominated for Emmys.

The Monkees is a NBC situation comedy that aired from September 12,
1966 to March 25, 1968. The series follows the adventures of four young
men (The Monkees) as they strive to make a name for themselves as rock ‘n
roll singers. The show won two Emmy Awards in 1967.

ACTOR CLIFF ROBERTSON HAS DIED AT 88

Clifford Parker "Cliff" Robertson, III had a film and television career that
spanned half of a century. Robertson won the 1968 Academy Award for
Best Actor for his role in the movie Charly. His most recent notable film
role was "Uncle Ben Parker” in the Spider-Man series. According to the 
Associated Press, his secretary of 53 years, Evelyn Christel, said he
died of natural causes a day after his 88th birthday Friday.
