Actor Gary Cooper was renowned for his quiet, understated acting style which
was particularly well suited to the many Western films he made. His career was
from 1925 until shortly before his death, and comprised more than one hundred
films. Cooper received five Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, winning
twice for Sergeant York (1941) and High Noon (1952). He also received an
Honorary Award in 1961 from the Academy. The American Film Institute named
Cooper among the AFI’s 100 Years – 100 Stars, ranking 11th among males from
the Classic Hollywood cinema period.

Actor Darren McGavin is best known for playing the title role in the ABC
television horror series Kolchak: The Night Stalker (1974- 1975), and for
his portrayal of the grumpy father in the film classic A Christmas Story
(1983). He also appeared in the starring role in the 1950s syndicated
TV series Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer (1958 – 1960). McGavin
also starred in the NBC western series Riverboat (1959 – 1961).
FORMER CHILD ACTOR DEAD AT 88
LOS ANGELES (AP) Jackie Cooper, the former child movie star who
won a best actor Oscar nomination at the age of 9 for “Skippy” and
grew up to play The Daily Planet editor in Christopher Reeve’s four
“Superman” movies, has died. His son John Cooper said his father
died Tuesday of natural cause at a nursing facility in Santa Monica,
California. He was 88.
