The Sunday strip appeared in the half-page format, which was the only complete
format for the entire life of the Sunday strip. Most of the other characters that
eventually became the main characters of Peanuts did not appear until later
.
The comic strip Dick Tracy made its debut in the Detroit Mirror on
Sunday, October 4, 1931 as Plainclothes Tracy. It was created by
Chester Gould who wrote and drew the popular strip until 1977.
