SERIES DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1956

 

Indictment was a popular radio drama aired on the CBS network and it
started on January 29, 1956, airing up to 1959. This show was based
on the case files of former New York City Assistant District Attorney
Eleazer Lipsky. The subject of the show was the step-by-step account
of the handling of criminal cases leading to an indictment brought by
Assistant District Attorney Edward McCormick, played by Nat  Polen. 


Nat Polen, known for his role as
Dr. James Craig on ABC-TV’s
soap opera ”One Life to Live.”

RADIO SHOW DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1946


J. Scott Smart

 

The Fat Man, a popular radio show during the 1940s and early 1950s was a
detective drama based on characters by Dashiell Hammett. It starred J. Scott
Smart
(above) in the title role, as a detective who started out anonymous but
rapidly acquired the name ‘Brad Runyon’.

Broadcast from the studios of WJZ in Newark, New Jersey, the series premiered
on the ABC Radio Network on Monday, January 21, 1946, at 8:30pm, as part of
a block of four new programs and ran until 1951. Based on Dashiell Hammett’s
fiction, The Fat Man was further developed by producer, E.J. Rosenberg. The
program was directed by Clark Andrews, creator of Big Town, and Charles
Powers. The main writer was Richard Ellington, with other scripts by Robert
Sloane and Lawrence Klee.

TV SERIES DEBUTED ON THIS DAY IN 1951

After a successful run on radio, Dragnet became popular enough to move to
NBC television where it debuted as a special preview on "Chesterfield Sound
Off Time". The show began officially on January 3, 1952 and aired until August
23, 1959.
