RADIO SHOW DEBUTED ON THIS DATE IN 1947

The Big Story was a radio crime show on NBC which dramatized the true stories of real-life newspaper reporters. The only continuing character was the narrator, Bob Sloane.The first sponsor of the show was Pall Mall Cigarettes and Lucky Strike Cigarettes sponsored the last two years. The series aired until March 23, 1955 and was top rated, rivaling Bing Crosby’s Philco Radio Time.

ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ~ 30 YEARS AGO ON THIS DATE IN 1981

It was 30 years ago today that President Ronald Reagan, in office just over two months, was shot outside the Washington Hilton by John Hinckley Jr. President Reagan and three others were shot and wounded, Reagan suffered a punctured lung, but prompt medical attention allowed him to recover quickly. Reagan was the first serving United States president to survive being shot in an assassination attempt. Hinckley was found not
guilty by reason of insanity and remains confined to a psychiatric facility.

IRONSIDE DEBUTED ON THIS DATE IN 1967

Ironside is a Universal television series which ran on NBC from September
14, 1967 to January 16, 1975. The show starred Raymond Burr (above) as
the Wheelchair-confined Chief of Detectives, Robert T. Ironside. Burr’s 
character debuted in a made for TV movie. The show earned Burr six
Emmy and two Golden Globe nominations.  

The opening theme music was written by Quincy Jones and was the first
synthesizer-based television theme song.

CANNON DEBUTED ON THIS DATE IN 1971

Cannon

Cannon is a CBS-TV detective series produced by Quinn Martin which aired until 
March 3, 1976.The main character, Frank Cannon, was a former detective with
the Los Angeles police department, played by William Conrad (above). In 1973
Cannon resulted in a spinoff series, Barnaby Jones.
