Pablo Casals (Pau Casals i Defilló)
(December 29, 1876 – October 22, 1973)

Pablo Casals was a cellist, composer, and conductor from Catalonia,
Spain. He is generally regarded as the pre-eminent cellist of the first
half of the 20th century, and one of the greatest cellists of all time. He
made many recordings throughout his career and was awarded the
Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy.

The Cuban Missile Crisis began on October 14, 1962, bringing the United
States and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear conflict. Photographs
taken by a high-altitude U-2 spy plane (above) offered incontrovertible
evidence that Soviet-made medium-range missiles in Cuba—capable of
carrying nuclear warheads—were now stationed 90 miles off the
American coastline.

The Cuban Missile Crisis, also known as the October Crisis formally ended 
when the Soviet Union removed its missiles and bombers from Cuba and
the U.S.ended its blockade of the island. A series of agreements sharply
reduced U.S.–Soviet tensions during the following years.
