Leap years exist because while the world follows a 365-day
Gregorian calendar, it actually takes the planet a little bit
more than a year to orbit the sun. It takes Earth 365 days,
5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds to orbit the sun,
according to NASA — and while that is rounded down to
the 365 days we recognize as a typical year, those nearly
six extra hours don’t disappear.

Instead, leap years are added to account for the difference
and extra day keeps calendars and seasons from gradually
falling out of sync and impacting harvesting, planting and
other cycles based on the seasons. Without Leap Days, in
100 years, calendars would be 24 days off.

William Albert Haynes III (70)

(KATU) PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Police announced today that
the ex-wrestler, Billy Jack Haynes, accused of killing his wife
(below) is out of the hospital, but will face charges for second-
degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon. He is scheduled to
make his first court appearance Thursday.

Outside of his three year run with the then-WWF highlighted by a
match at WrestleMania III, Haynes was best known for his work
in the Portland area. 

Janette Becraft (85)

Richard Philip Lewis (June 29, 1947 – February 27, 2024)

Following a battle with Parkinson’s since April 2023, Lewis died
of a heart attack on February 27, 2024.

Charles Dierkop, known for playing rough-and-tumble roles
in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting, has
died at ag e 87.  

Dierkop had recently suffered a heart attack and pneumonia before he died Sunday at a hospital in Sherman Oaks, Calif.

On February 27, 2006, baseball pioneer Effa Manley became the
first woman elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Manley, who
died in 1981, was co-owner of the Newark (New Jersey) Eagles,
a Negro League powerhouse, and a huge advocate for Black
ballplayers and civil rights causes.
