Credit for the invention of Silly Putty is disputed. It has been attributed to Earl
Warrick, of the then newly formed Dow Corning in 1943 and also Harvey Chin;
and James Wright, a Scottish inventor working for General Electric in New
Haven,  Connecticut.Throughout his life, Warrick insisted that he and his
colleague, Rob Roy McGregor, received the patent for Silly Putty before
Wright did; but Crayola’s history of Silly Putty states that Wright invented
it first.

In 1961 Silly Putty went worldwide, becoming a hit in the Soviet Union and
Europe. In 1968 it was taken into lunar orbit by the Apollo 8 astronauts.

Silly Putty was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2001.

Danish immigrant Christian Nelson, a schoolteacher and candy store owner,
began experimenting in 1921 with different ways to adhere melted chocolate
to bricks of ice cream in Onawa, Iowa. He began selling his invention under
the name "I-Scream Bars." In 1921, he filed for a patent, and secured an
agreement with local chocolate producer Russell C. Stover to mass-produce
them under the new trademarked name "Eskimo Pie", a name suggested by
Mrs.. Stover, and to create the Eskimo Pie Corporation. After the patent 
was issued on January 24, 1922, Nelson franchised the product, allowing
ice cream manufacturers to produce them under that name.

It was on this day in 1959 that Buddy Holly kicked off the twenty-four date Winter
Dance Party at the Million Dollar Ballroom in Milwaukee, backed by Tommy Allsup
on lead guitar, Waylon Jennings on bass and Carl Bunch on drums.

Crystal Ballroom (above), originally built as Cotillion Hall, is a historic building in
Portland, Oregon. Cotillion Hall was built January 21, 1914 as a ballroom, and
dance revivals were held there through the Great Depression. Starting in the
1960s, the hall has also been host to many popular pop, rock, folk, blues and
jazz artists, as well as beat poetry and other entertainment.  

It was originally owned by Montrose Ringler who lost the ballroom in the early
1920s. Dad Watson then bought the building in the mid-1920s, when mostly
square dances were held during that time. After Watson’s death in the 1930s,
Ralph Farrier bought the ballroom and renamed it the Crystal Ballroom. The
venue continued hosting square dances through the 1950s.

In the early 1960s new acts were brought in, such as gypsy brass bands and
R&B performers, such as James Brown, Marvin Gaye, and Ike & Tina Turner.

In 1967, largely psychedelic acts such as the Grateful Dead performed in the
ballroom. This was cut short in 1968, due to concerns about what such music
was doing to the youth of Portland.

From the 1970s through the mid-1990s, the ballroom was not used for any public
events. In 1979, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places
as Cotillion Hall.

Fort Laramie was a radio Western series that aired Sunday afternoons at 
5:30pm (ET) on CBS from January 22 to October 28, 1956. Once a week
the cast and crew gathered at CBS Studio One in Hollywood to tape the
show. In 1956 this was the last radio production studio in use in California.

Produced and directed by Norman Macdonnell, the Western drama depicted
life at old Fort Laramie during the 19th Century. The 41 episodes starred
Raymond Burr as Lee Quince, captain of the cavalry. One year later, Burr
became a television star as Perry Mason.
