CAPITOL CORNERSTONE LAID ON THIS DAY IN 1793

A groundbreaking ceremony for the United States Capitol building took place 
on September 18, 1793. President George Washington, dressed in masonic 
attire (above), laid the cornerstone.

THEME PARK OPENED ON THIS DAY IN 1955

Disneyland Park, as it is known today, is located in Anaheim, California and is owned 
and operated by the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts division of The Walt Disney  
Company. Construction began in 1954 and the park was unveiled during a special  
televised press event (below) on the ABC Television Network on Sunday, July 17, 
1955.

VEHICLE WAS PART OF PAST ROSE PARADES

The Jay W. Stevens Disaster Service Unit was built in 1939 for the Portland 
Fire Department. The vehicle was the first of its kind and was rededicated
as the Emergency Car in 1953.

The fire station at 55 SW Ash Street was constructed in 1950 as Engine 21’s
quarters and became Engine 1’s house in 1984. The Jay W. Stevens Disaster
Unit can be seen at the far right of the parked apparatus.

Construction of the Vista House atop Crown Point in Oregon began on December 29, 1916. It was built as a rest stop observatory for travelers
on the old Columbia River Gorge Highway and as a memorial honoring
Oregon’s pioneers who made their way down the Columbia River.

MEMORIAL DEDICATED ON THIS DAY IN 1943

The $3,000,000 Jefferson Memorial was officially dedicated by President Roosevelt
(left) on April 13, 1943, the 200th anniversary of Jefferson’s birthday. At that time, 
the statue of Jefferson had not yet been finished,due to material shortages during
World War II. The statue that was installed at the time was a plaster cast of the
sculptors work that had been painted to look like bronze. The finished
