STATUE DEDICATED ON THIS DAY IN 1886
Unveiling of the Statue of Liberty
A dedication ceremony for the Statue of Liberty was held on the afternoon of
Thursday, October 28, 1886. President Grover Cleveland, the former New York governor, presided over the event ,accepting the statue on behalf of the United
States. On the morning of the dedication, a parade was held in New York City;
estimates of the number of people who watched it ranged from several hundred thousand to a million. President Cleveland headed the procession. As the parade passed the New York Stock Exchange, traders threw ticker tape from the windows, beginning the New York tradition of… the ticker-tape parade.
LODGE DEDICATED 75 YEARS AGO TODAY
Today marks the official opening of Timberline Lodge located at Oregon’s majestic
Mount Hood. President Franklin Roosevelt (above) spoke to the crowd that had
gathered for the dedication ceremonies, five months before the completion of the
lodge’s interior. It opened to the public in February 1938.
CAPITOL CORNERSTONE LAID ON THIS DAY IN 1793
A groundbreaking ceremony for the United States Capitol building took place
on September 18, 1793. President George Washington, dressed in masonic
attire (above), laid the cornerstone.
