Curtiss Candy Company is a now defunct confectionery
brand and a former company based in Chicago, Illinois. It
was founded in 1916 by Otto Schnering.

In 1964, Standard Brands purchased Curtiss Candy Company,
Standard Brands merged with Nabisco in 1981. In 1990, RJR
Nabisco sold the Curtiss brands to Nestlé.

In 1920, Otto invented the first five-
cent candy bar, Baby Ruth. He’s been
called the “U.S. Candy Bar King”.

Popular Mechanics is a magazine of popular science and
technology, featuring automotive, home, outdoor,
electronics, science, do-it-yourself, and technology
topics. Military topics, aviation and transportation of all 
 types, space, tools and gadgets are commonly featured.

It was founded in 1902 by Henry Haven Windsor, who was
the editor and, as owner of the Popular Mechanics Company,
the publisher.

For decades, the tagline of the monthly magazine was "Written
so you can understand it." In 1958, PM was purchased by the
Hearst Corporation, now Hearst Communications.

In 2013, the US edition changed from twelve to ten issues per
year, and in 2014 the tagline was changed to "How your world
works." The magazine added a podcast in recent years,
including regular features Most Useful Podcast Ever and How
Your World Works.

Singer-songwriter Terry Kirkman, a founding member of the
1960s folk-rock band the Association, has died at 83.

In the years following his departure from the Association,
Kirkman retired from the music industry, and worked in
California as an addictions counselor.

Kirkman lived in Montclair, California with his wife Heidi.

On August 27, 1955, the first edition of “The Guinness Book of
Records” was published in Great Britain; it quickly proved to
be a hit. Now known as the “Guinness World Records” book,
the annual publication features a wide range of feats related
to humans and animals.

The inspiration for the record book can be traced to Sir Hugh
Beaver, managing director of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin.

The world’s largest chain of convenience stores originated in
1927 when Southland Ice Company employee John Jefferson
Green began selling basics like eggs and bread on a stand in
front of one of the firm’s ice houses in Dallas,Texas. Company
chairman Joe C Thompson loved the concept and opened
several locations in Texas. The chain’s name was changed to
Tot’em Stores then 7-Eleven in 1946 to reflect its long opening
hours.

Although a subsidiary of the Tokyo-based Seven & i Holdings
since 1973, 7-Eleven is headquartered in Dallas,Texas.
