RECAPING THIS DAY IN HISTORY
TODAY IN HISTORY
LODGE DEDICATED 75 YEARS AGO TODAY
Today marks the official opening of Timberline Lodge located at Oregon’s majestic
Mount Hood. President Franklin Roosevelt (above) spoke to the crowd that had
gathered for the dedication ceremonies, five months before the completion of the
lodge’s interior. It opened to the public in February 1938.
STATESMAN WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1722
Samuel Adams (September 27, 1722 – October 2, 1803)
Samuel Adams was a politician in colonial Massachusetts and one of the Founding
Fathers of the United States. He was a leader of the movement that became the American Revolution, and was one of the architects of the principles of American republicanism that shaped the political culture of the United States. Adams was a
second cousin to President John Adams.
Note: Samuel Adams did indeed operate a malt house in Boston, Massachusetts,
but after a few years, the entire company eventually went bankrupt. He lost a large
sum of his father’s money and returned to politics.
TODAY IN HISTORY
The first televised presidential debate took place in Chicago on September 26,
1960. Vice President Richard Nixon, recovering from the flu, looked pale and
sweaty. His Democratic opponent, Senator John F. Kennedy, had just come
from campaigning in California and looked tanned and vital.
Listeners to the radio broadcast thought Nixon won the debate, but television
viewers gave the win to Kennedy.
