FIRST AIRCRAFT CARRIER LAUNCHED ON THIS DAY IN 1933

USS Ranger (CV-4) was launched at the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry dock Co., Newport News, Va.(top photo). It was the first ship of the United States Navy to be designed and built from the keel up as an aircraft carrier. She served mainly in the 
Atlantic during WWll, and carried out the only fleet carrier attack in the Atlantic
during the war. Ranger received two battle stars for her service. The ship was
decommissioned on October 18, 1946. she was sold for scrap to a Shipbuilding
and Dry dock Company in Chester, Pennsylvania on January 31, 1947.

John Glenn became the fifth person in space, the third American in space and the
first American to orbit the Earth, aboard Friendship 7 on Tuesday,February 20, 1962,
on the Mercury-Atlas 6 mission, circling the globe three times during a flight lasting 4 hours, 55 minutes, and 23 seconds.

John Glenn Anniversary

At left is John Glenn with Scott Carpenter. The two men are the lone survivors of the original Mercury 7 astronauts. They joined the remaining veterans of NASA’s Project
Mercury team on Saturday at Kennedy Space Center in celebrating Glenn’s 50th
anniversary of his historic orbital flight.
