The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent agency
of the U.S. government. It was established by the Communications Act of
1934 as a successor to the Federal Radio Commission and is charged with
regulating all non-federal use of radio and television broadcasting, interstate telecommunications, wire, satellite and cable.

WAR DECLARED ON THIS DATE IN 1812
The war began as the U.S. declared war against Great Britain. The conflictÂ
was over trade restrictions. The two countries ultimately signed the TreatyÂ
of Ghent on December 24, 1814. News of the peace treaty took two months
to reach the U.S.,during which fighting continued until February 18,1815.TheÂ
war opened a long era of peaceful relations between the United States and Â
the British Empire.Â

in the the War of 1812 and the early career of General Andrew Jackson,
depicted in the above painting. Â
POLITICAL SCANDAL BEGAN ON THIS DATE IN 1972
Watergate is a complex (above) in Washington, D.C.that was the location of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in 1972. Five men were arrested for burglarizing the office of the committee. An investigation discovered that the men
had connections to the Committee to Re-elect President Nixon.The event was
the beginning of the Watergate affair. Additionally, various other crimes were
exposed, such as political espionage and corruption. In the end, president Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974 and Gerald Ford became the next president.The affairÂ
also resulted in the indictment trial, conviction and incarceration of several Nixon administration officials.
FIRST COMMERCIAL COMPUTER ON THIS DATE IN 1951
The UNIVAC I (UNIVersal Automatic Computer I, seen below) was the first
commercial computer produced in the United States. It was delivered to the
U.S. Census Bureau on March 31, 1951, and was dedicated on June 14 that
same year.

OBSERVANCE BEGAN ON THIS DATE IN 1777
Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the U.S. Flag by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. It is not an official federal holiday, though on June 14, 1937, Pennsylvania became the first and only state to celebrate Flag Day
as a state holiday, beginning in the town of Rennerdale. In August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.
