PRESIDENT GAVE HIS FAREWELL ADDRESS

1989: The night President Reagan said farewell | Babalú Blog
Farewell Address to the Nation | Ronald Reagan (reaganlibrary.gov)

On this day in 1989, after eight years as president of the United
States,
Ronald Reagan gave his farewell address to the American
people. In his speech, President Reagan spoke with particular enthusiasm about the foreign policy achievements of his
administration.

In his speech, Reagan declared that America “rediscovered” its commitment to world freedom in the 1980s. The United States
was “respected again in the world and looked to for leadership.”

The key, according to the president, was a return to “common
sense” that “told us that to preserve the peace, we’d have to
become strong again after years of weakness.”

The achievements of his administration gained him much favor
with the American public, and Ronald Reagan left office as one
of the most popular modern U.S. presidents.

FILMING BEGAN FOR THE MOVIE ‘’ROCKY’’

The Original ‘Rocky’ Is 40 Years Old? Absolutely

The classic rags-to-riches story got a macho spin in the Oscar-
winning Rocky, which was written by its star, Sylvester Stallone,
and
began filming on January 9, 1976. Stallone had his own rags-
to-riches tale: Born in the gritty Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of
New York City, he was a juvenile delinquent who was kicked out
of a number of schools before he turned 15. After attending high
school in Philadelphia and studying drama at the University of
Miami, Stallone moved back to New York and later to Los Angeles,
with dreams of becoming an actor.

Behind The Scenes: ROCKY ⋆ Film Goblin
When shooting his famous jog through the streets of Philadelphia, Stallone pulled a tendon in his leg and
was taken to a nearby hospital in a wheelbarrow.

Most of the jogging scenes of Rocky jogging were
shot guerrilla-style, with no permits, no equipment,
and no extras. The entire movie w as shot in 28
days.

SOME GREAT RADIO WAS HEARD HERE!

1935 Truetone (Western Auto) 3-band console radio.

Truetone was the private label radio, television and electronics
brand of Western Auto Supply Company of Kansas City, Missouri. Western Auto was a company founded in 1909 to sell tires and automobile supplies for the Model T Ford and other cars through
its catalogs and, starting in 1913, through retail stores in Kansas
City and other major cities. In 1915, Western Auto was split into
two companies, one in California and one in Kansas City.

These were separate companies with a common founder and they
had virtually identical catalogs and merchandise offerings. The
two companies merged again in the mid 1950s.

In the late 1920s Western Auto was looking for new items to add to
its merchandise lines. After selling radio tubes under its "Wizard"
brand in the 1920s, the company offered its first Truetone brand
radios in 1931. Truetone was the radio brand sold by Western Auto
of Kansas City while the California company sold its radios under
the name "Western Air Patrol."
