May Day is an ancient spring festival with celebrations first appearing in pre-Christian times, with the festival of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, and the Walpurgis
Night celebrations of the Germanic countries. May 1 is also recognized in the U.S.
as Law Day.

Inauguration of George Washington
The Electoral College elected George Washington unanimously as the first president
of the United States in 1789. His inauguration on April 30, 1789 became the first U.S.
national holiday in 1889.
