ACTOR BILL PAXTON IS 56 TODAY
ACTRESS DANA WYNTER HAS DIED AT 79
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dana Wynter, who ran from the Pod People in the 1956
science-fiction classic "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," has died in Southern
California. She was 79. Her son, Mark Bautzer, told the Los Angeles Times the
actress died Thursday, May 5th, of congestive heart failure. She appeared in
film and television for more than forty years.
DARREN MCGAVIN (May 7, 1922 – Feb. 25, 2006)
Actor Darren McGavin is best known for playing the title role in the ABC
television horror series Kolchak: The Night Stalker (1974- 1975), and for
his portrayal of the grumpy father in the film classic A Christmas Story
(1983). He also appeared in the starring role in the 1950s syndicated
TV series Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer (1958 – 1960). McGavin
also starred in the NBC western series Riverboat (1959 – 1961).
FILMING STARTED ON THIS DATE IN 1974
The 1975 summer blockbuster thriller Jaws was directed by master film
maker Steven Spielberg and was based on Peter Benchley’s novel of the
same name. Principal photography began on May 2, 1974 on the island of
Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. The location was reportedly chosen for the
sandy bottom of that part of the ocean. This helped the prop sharks to operate
smoothly and still provide a realistic location.

RADIO SHOW’S NETWORK DEBUT ON THIS DATE IN 1935
Lights Out was an extremely popular old-time radio program devoted mostly to
horror and the supernatural. The first series of shows ran on a local New York
NBC affiliate, WENR, at midnight on Wednesday, starting in January of 1934. It
was soon picked up by the NBC radio network, after huge demand. and was
broadcast nationally, usually late at night and always on Wednesdays until
the summer of 1947. The series eventually made the transition to TV. The
show was to radio, like what The Twilight Zone was to television.
